She was yellings things that didn't make any sense at all. By then it was obvious that the disease had already taken most of her mind.
My dad went to get a nurse and my mom followed. I was left in the room, and my grandma reached out to my hand. Once I'd moved over next to her wheelchair, she grabbed me by the arm, pulling and tugging at me frantically.
"Let's go before they come back. I want to go home," she pleaded. "Help me leave. Please, get me out of here!"
But I was helpless. She was helpless. She had to stay because she needed the facility's level of care. She had reached what is commonly referred to as the anger/paranoa phase of the disease, and she had become a threat to not only others but to herself as well. Her third degree burns from the fire were a testament to that.
I will never forget that first visit to the nursing home. The trauma it caused will haunt my memory forever. Alziemer's is a sickness that the world must be rid of. I long for the day when there is a cure that will spare others of this cruelty.
Today, after hearing of her passing, I take comfort in knowing that her suffering has finally ended. Her soul has been released. At last, she is able to go home.
